BOTOX Cosmetic®
BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is a revolutionary approach to reversing the affects of facial wrinkles. Crow’s feet, worry lines and laugh lines can all be a thing of the past. How does BOTOX Cosmetic® work?
BOTOX Cosmetic® is the only product of its kind that is directed at the facial muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It targets what are known as dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated muscular contractions, such as frowning and squinting. BOTOX Cosmetic®, an injectable treatment derived from a purified protein, works by relaxing the muscles that cause these dynamic wrinkles, giving your face a more relaxed and refreshed appearance. Best of all, regular use of this simple treatment will soften expression lines and help to “stop the clock” on the development or further deepening of lines. In addition, treatment is so quick and easy that you can often have it done over lunch.
The BOTOX Cosmetic® Procedure BOTOX Cosmetic® injections are performed without anesthesia because they are virtually painless. Only a very small sting is felt when the injections are made. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated two to three times per year to retain the effects. Research has suggested, however, that long-term use of the injections leads to a longer duration of each treatment's effect. Patients over the age of 65 may not experience such dramatic results. BOTOX Cosmetic® is only useful in treating expression lines and cannot be used to repair sagging skin caused by aging.

Before Treatment
To better understand your overall health, we will evaluate your medical history prior to surgery. In addition, a complete examination of your eyes is made in order to decide the most effective injection sites. All issues and concerns will be discussed. The areas that will be treated are marked and digital photographs are taken in order to determine the amount of improvement after surgery.
Post-Operative Information
After the operation patients may experience slight bruising around the area that quickly fades. Normal activities can be performed immediately. Possible side effects are temporary weakness of nearby muscles or in rare cases an eyelid may droop. BOTOX Cosmetic® is completely reversible so any side effect is only a temporary condition. The doctor will explain all risks associated at the time of your consultation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my face still have expression?
BOTOX Cosmetic® is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. When administered by an experienced doctor, you can still smile, frown, and be expressive. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of your facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated area.
Are BOTOX Cosmetic® treatments safe?
Absolutely. BOTOX has been licensed in Canada since 1990 as a safe and effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions. In 2001, Health Canada approved BOTOX Cosmetic® for wrinkle therapy, and it has been proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing.
What is the treatment like?
A tiny amount of BOTOX Cosmetic® is injected very precisely into the muscle being treated. A very fine needle and a small amount of liquid is used so the pain associated with the injection is minimal. The sensation has been compared to a bug bite. No sedation or local anaesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
How long does a treatment take?
A BOTOX Cosmetic® procedure is quick, simple and there’s no downtime. Following a facial analysis by Dr. Bartsch and a discussion on your desired outcome, the procedure itself only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to perform.
How much does a BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment cost?
The costs associated with a treatment are dependent on the amount of product needed and the areas of the face being treated. As an example, treating frown lines between the eyebrows typically costs $300 to $600 depending on the size of the area and the depth of the lines. Since the treatment results generally last up to four months, it works out to less than $5 per day.
Who should not use this treatment?
There are very few restrictions regarding the use of BOTOX Cosmetic®. Those who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurological disease should not be treated.
How soon will I see a difference?
You can expect to see results within days after your treatment. The appearance of wrinkles and lines may continue to diminish for up to one week.
Does BOTOX Cosmetic® have any side effects?
A possible side effect bruising, which is temporary, localized to the area of injection, and can be easily covered with makeup.
Are there creams that are better than BOTOX Cosmetic®?
There is no scientific evidence that supports that creams work better than BOTOX Cosmetic®. Creams work well on the surface of the skin. BOTOX Cosmetic® works below the surface to relax the muscles that cause the lines and wrinkles to form.
How long does the treatment last?
The effects usually last up to four months. After repeat treatments, the effects may begin to last longer.
